Ice Hotels

These structures are made of snow and of ice, and they exist only while the cold holds. Each is packed, cut or laid again from the ground every winter, to a plan drawn afresh, and each goes in the thaw. Where an operator keeps something heated or cooled by machine, the entry says so.

Icehotel

Icehotel stands beside the Torne river in Jukkasjärvi, north of the Arctic Circle. Through the winter season the site carries a building made of snow and of ice taken from the river, with corridors, halls and rooms cut and moulded rather than built up from parts. The surrounding ground is flat and open, and the village itself is small.

A vaulted passage of packed snow with a doorway cut into the far wall

Each winter the snow structure is raised again to a fresh design, and artists work on separate rooms inside it. When the season ends the building softens and returns to the river it came from. Nothing of that year's plan is carried over, so the halls of one season do not repeat those of the last.

The operator also keeps a hall that is cooled by machine and stays open through the year, so ice rooms can be seen outside the winter months. Warm rooms in ordinary buildings stand nearby on the same site. Opening dates shift with the weather and are published by the operator.

SnowCastle of Kemi

The SnowCastle stands at Kemi on the shore of the Bay of Bothnia. In the winter season the operator raises a snow structure with walls, arched openings and halls, together with sleeping rooms held at a temperature near freezing. The sea ice reaches the walls, and the ground around the site is open and level.

The walls are packed from snow and the openings cut once the mass has set. Every winter brings a different plan, drawn afresh rather than copied. In spring the structure sags and then goes, leaving the shore bare until the following season, when work starts again from the ground up.

The operator also keeps a building on the same site that is cooled by machine and stays open beyond the winter months, along with warm rooms and a restaurant. Which parts are open in any month changes, and the operator asks guests to confirm before travelling.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

Kakslauttanen occupies a clearing in pine forest north of Saariselkä, in Finnish Lapland. Two different things stand on the same ground. Snow igloos are packed and hollowed for the winter season, while glass igloos are permanent, heated shelters with domed roofs. The operator does not treat the two as the same kind of shelter, and neither does this entry.

Domed glass shelters and snow mounds spread across a clearing in pine forest

The snow igloos are raised once the snow will hold, and they go when the thaw arrives. The heated glass igloos remain in place through the year and are warmed like any other building. Log rooms and a restaurant also stand on the site, in timber rather than snow.

Outside the winter season the heated shelters, the log buildings and the restaurants continue to work. The snow structures do not. The operator publishes which parts of the site are open in each month and asks guests to confirm dates directly before booking travel.

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt

Iglu-Dorf keeps a group of snow domes on a high shelf above Zermatt, in the Swiss Alps. The domes are packed from snow for the winter season and hollowed once the mass holds. Sleeping happens inside them on insulated bases. The ground around is open, exposed and well above the village.

Every dome is built again from the beginning each winter, and the interiors are cut afresh; some are carved with relief work. Nothing stands through the summer. When the snow goes the shelf returns to bare rock and grass, and the operator leaves the ground clear until the next building season.

The operator runs other locations in the Alps on the same seasonal pattern and keeps no snow structure open outside winter. Access to the shelf depends on the mountain railway and on the weather. Dates, meeting arrangements and clothing advice come from the operator directly.

Hotel of Ice at Bâlea Lac

This structure is raised beside Bâlea Lake, high in the Făgăraș Mountains of central Romania. Blocks of ice are cut from the frozen lake itself and set as walls and beds for the winter season. A separate room built in the same way is used for meals. The lake sits above the treeline, on open ground.

Work begins once the lake ice is thick enough to cut, so the building's start shifts from year to year. The plan is drawn fresh each season. In spring the blocks return to the lake, and the shore is left clear until cutting begins again the following winter.

Nothing of the ice structure remains outside the winter season. Warm buildings stand near the lake and work on their own calendar. The mountain road over the range closes for the winter, and access rests on the cable car, which the operator asks guests to check before setting out.
